Located on a quiet, discreet street in the Prati district, halfway between the social whirl of the Spanish Steps and the spiritual calm of the Vatican, the Hotel dei Mellini is an early 20th-century example of solid, refined middle-class architecture set among buildings designed by Renzi, Piacentini and Koch.

Great luxury awaits guests of this hotel, where absolute comfort is based on attention to detail. An all-enveloping whole is born out of sophisticated interior design, precious materials such as oak and polychromatic marble, a host of contemporary artworks selected with unerring taste, and the cordial helpfulness of the staff, ever-present and yet never obtrusive.

The cream-colored façade of the Mellini with ashlar corners has a vaulted entrance and a short flight of steps leading into a light and well-furnished hall with the reception desk, a lounge, and a small American bar that helps to give you the measure of the hotel as a whole. A glance at the list of drinks is enough to show that this discreet bar offers no fewer than 31 brands of superior whisky, including an 18-year-old Bowmore, and ten variations on the classic theme of the Martini cocktail. The short but carefully selected wine list also offers a splendid range of wines by the glass to accompany a snack or a light meal.

From the hall we move to the welcoming breakfast room, where oil paintings by avant-garde Roman artists like Paolo Fiorentino, Aurelio Bulzatti and Rossella Fumasoni provide a backdrop to an à la carte breakfast and a splendid buffet including organic products and desserts made on the premises. The restaurant echoes the hotel’s distinctive colors of Savoy blue and copper, and features exquisite china by Villeroy & Boch. The hall also opens onto a green cloister with tables and a conversation corner for an aperitif in the open or a last glass of champagne by candlelight.

The large terrace on the top floor offers a delightful open-air space overlooking the rooftops and balconies of Rome, where the winter is short and the spring and autumn are mild and sunny. In a more secluded area, a solarium enveloped in the scent of flowering jasmine awaits guests wishing to relax in the sun on comfortable wooden chaises lounges covered in white cushions with shower facilities and soft towels readily available and staff always on hand to take orders for drinks. A meeting room with large photosensitive windows ensuring total privacy also gives onto the terrace. There is a big gym just eight minutes by taxis in the Villa Borghese area for those that would like that!

Equipped with the latest audiovisual facilities and capable of seating a total of 70 people, the three comfortable meeting rooms on the ground floor have hosted many a casting session for international films. In addition to businessmen and tourists, the regular clientele of the Hotel dei Mellini includes a great many film companies and figures from the world of showbiz like Abatantuono, Stadio, Chiambretti, Jon Bon Jovi and Matthew McConaughy.

There are 80 rooms for guests including 11 suites and 2 junior suites. The 5th and 6th floors are reserved for non-smokers. There are two spacious elevators with floors of inlaid marble and wood paneling. The floors are decorated in light, restful colors, with shades of beige predominating in the rooms while the curtains and bedspreads of sumptuous damask satin pick up the hotel’s keynotes of blue and copper. The walls are hung with attractive hand-colored prints showing Canova’s statue of Paolina Borghese. Marble is used for all the bathrooms, some of which are fitted with two washbasins. The suites also have a bathroom for guests and a courtesy set including a line of aromatherapy products based on ginger essence.

The numerous optional extras include weather forecasts for the following day delivered to your room every day in the early afternoon, a warm bathrobe, bathroom slippers, private safe, pay TV, desk with modem socket, and minibar including Veuve Clicquot champagne and Berlucchi spumante. The finishing touch is provided by a splendid display of lustrous red apples for the guests on the reception desk, manned by staff always ready to anticipate the possible desires of guests staying at this gem of Roman hospitality with the greatest professionalism and courtesy.
